Studying Locally .vs. Studying Abroad
Decisions, decisions!!!A big step you'll have to make thus it's only fair to ponder back and forth to study locally or abroad. Here are a couple of pointers to aid off a little of the dilemma that is causing those sleepless nights. Worry not because truth be told, either or it will still be a remarkable endeavor in this stage of college-life. Remember - It is what you make of it! Studying LOCALLY .vs. Studying ABROAD The Cost Factor Studying Locally: Definitely cost beneficial to local students. You save approximately three times from the expected cost of studying abroad! Great savings - the comfort of your own bed, family's car to drive, the TV, the washing machine, everything a house needs! And of course, mom's home-cooked meals! Studying Abroad: The expenditure in the form of visa, passport, and flight charges! Not to mention foreign exchange rates for tuition fees, accommodation, transportation, and other necessities needed to survive! However, there are alternatives to keep within budget, and one thing's for sure is that the exposure and experience gained is - priceless! Behind The Books Studying Locally: There are outdoorsy hang-out spots but many prefer the comfort of air-conditioning. *hint - the malls!* - but at least close buddies and family members are here! Familiarity of roads, places, and lifestyle is certain, and nasi lemak (for Malaysian) is definitely at reach! Studying Abroad: Lots of outdoorsy spots to chill-out and relax with friends. You may struggle from culture shock, but having one or more good local friends from the country will help a lot. Much to explore ; places , food, lifestyle of the locals, fashion, etc...... Boo-hoos Studying Locally: Probably the only 'seasons' you'll experience are either wet or dry (in Malaysia), depending on which country you're at. Expect to miss out on the whole adventure package of studying and living in a new environment. Studying Abroad: The four seasons - Winter, Summer, Spring, Autumn. Communication barrier will be prone if their main language isn't yours. You're bound to feel homesick and possibly lost and alienated for a while. Expect huge cravings for your local favourite dishes too! Studying Locally: Convenience! Feeling at ease within comfort zone and having familiarity at home-ground encourages better focus academically. Also, you'll know what's happening around town as opposed to coming home from abroad as a 'tourist'. Most importantly, you will not be deprived of the instant love and support from family members and friends.Studying Abroad: Character-building - Doing things on your own will groom you to be an independent and confident person. A mind-broadening lifetime experience that sees a different way of life. You could also pick up a new languages or at least an accent! Possessing a foreign qualification helps make you resume stand out more. Last but not least, the priceless experience! |
