Hairy Crab

大闸蟹

Shanghai Hairy Crab! also known as Chinese Mitten Crab or Big Sluice Crab.
The best season to enjoy hairy crab is Autumn as they mature between September and December. 
Male crabs (which have more meat) are best in September and female ones (which have roe) in October.

Lot of celebrities posted their picture eating hairy crab in weibo last month! So seducing! 
I was craving for it that time!
and finally I got to eat!
Dad asked his friend to buy it from oversea :D
 
There's THIRTY of them staying in my refrigerator ;
Just 3 days! Now left 3 of them only! All are gone into my family and my stomach!

 

Can you identify which is Male and which is Female?

Just look at the base of the crab. 
For the female, the base is smooth without a sharp “V”-shaped shell-thingy that all males have.
For male, the base have a sharp pointed “V”-shaped thingy that is quite unlike the female of the species. 




How to eat?

The big attraction to eat hairy crabs is eating the rich yellow/orange color roe of the hairy crabs!
Vinegar with ginger slice will be the dipping sauce for the crabs.
After that, for the rest of the crab, like their legs... we have to use scissors to cut it and use a pointy chopstick to push the meat out to eat. 
Lastly, drink a refreshingly hot cup of ginger tea!
 

 
 
  So now which is male and which is female? :D
